Aortic Valve

Aortic stenosis is one the most common valve problems.  This can occur as the valve wears with age or from a bicuspid valve which has only 2 leaflets instead of 3. Around 2% of the population is born with a bicuspid valve.  A leaky aortic valve is called insufficient or regurgitant, and also may require surgery.

The aortic valve is almost always replaced when surgery is necessary. There are two general types of valves, the biological and the mechanical. The biological are constructed from human or animal tissue. The mechanical are made from carbon and fabric. Each type has its strengths and weaknesses which will be discussed during consultation.
